Home Internet Link
The User Interface Card provides a direct link
to any Internet service in the home. All that is needed is a fast digital
connection to the Internet, such as a cable service or high bandwidth
DSL line, connected to a TV set-top box or PC.
Many such services are already in place. Digital
television is increasingly a catalyst for broadband home Internet connection.
As a result, an increasing number of networks can support the User Interface
Card service.
Smart card remote control
The User Interface Card uses a low cost, hand-held
remote control unit with a built-in smart card reader. The remote control
communicates with a TV set-top box or PC using a standard infra-red
link. When a card is inserted into the remote control, the front surface
of the card is visible through a transparent touch-sensitive panel.
The smart card determines the information and service delivered, without
any searching or typing of web addresses.
Icon-touch navigation
The smart cards have user-interface icons printed
on the surface. The icons are customised for each different card. Touching
a card icon activates a link to the card's Internet site. With one touch
the site can be reached and displayed on the TV screen. The icons on
the card can then be used to navigate the site, make selections and
order products or services. No keyboard or mouse is needed.
Consumer convenience
The User Interface Card gives consumers easy access
to a range of Internet services. Examples include on-line shopping,
home banking, listening to music, watching movies, playing on-line games,
finding information on local restaurants, checking latest sports results,
viewing a digital photo album, or sending a video-email. Each card is
effectively a convenient bookmark to favourite websites or frequently
accessed services.
Business marketing
The User Interface Card offers businesses a new
marketing model, unique branding opportunities and low-cost delivery
of services. Businesses can direct customers to their websites, target
specific customer needs and provide effective personalised services
to build customer loyalty. By encouraging online customer self-service,
overhead costs can be reduced. Because the card is both the marketing
tool and the user interface, user interaction can be incorporated into
branding and promotional strategies.
Network differentiator
For Internet Service Providers and TV Operators,
the User Interface Card offers a compelling service differentiator.
A broad range of easily accessed services will help retain existing
customers and attract new business, resulting in greater network usage.
As television goes digital, the User Interface Card offers unprecedented
opportunities for commercial Internet services. The User Interface Card
provides a simple solution for interactive TV - from Armchair to Online.
